HELP E4E BEAT THE HEAT
E4E  Education for Everyone is a 501 c 3, that's a not-for profit corporation. Their goal is to offer an opportunity to advance knowledge and learning for anybody that wants. They offer books, instruction, testing opportunities for GED and more. There is no charge for the students other than the cost of the GED exam.

E4E is located at 3318 Ave. D in Bay City in the old New Hope Missionary Baptist Church building. They have been doing a great job, serving many students in Bay City range in ages from teenagers to grandparents, and they've done it all by being frugal and making good use of your donations.  E4E operates without taxpayer money.

Chief of Operations Priscilla Robinson has worked tirelessly for months to make this opportunity for people available. She and the rest of the staff are all volunteers, rewarded only by the joy they receive from seeing the students succeed.

Computers are in place, Teachers are teaching, students are in place and learning,  they are holding classes Monday-Thursday 9am-noon and 4pm-7pm.  But that's all in danger of coming to an end unless you can help.  Summer electric bills are going to be beyond what E4E can afford so they've started the "Beat the Heat" campaign.

Clubs, civic organizations, corporations or individuals can help keep people learning by supporting E4E through the summer.  You can make your donation at the Education for Everyone location at 3318 ave D in Bay City,  or contact the Bay City Chamber of Commerce.

SPRING FOOTBALL AT BCISD
Bay City ISD Athletic Director Dan Burk has launched full-speed-ahead with his new duties by taking the Blackcats into new territory: Spring Football. University Interscholastic League rules allow for 18 days of full-pad football practice in the spring, and this will culminate in the big Blue & Gold Game at Memorial Stadium on May 24 at 6 p.m.

Burk is using this time to evaluate skills and talent, install new offensive and defensive schemes, and determine specific positions for players.

“We want to get to know our players and make sure that we optimize the talent that we have at different positions. The kids are excited. They want this and they are liking what we’re doing. We’re using a multiple offense -- more pro-style.  We’re also going with a 4-3 defense,” Burk said. The time invested now in football practice means that in the fall the student-athletes will face one week less of two-a-days.

Burk has brought in to lead the offense Dusty Ortiz. The two have worked together successfully in the past building winning programs.

Burk says the athletes have come a long way already in their strength conditioning. “The kids are working hard and doing all we expect. We’re bringing the Blackcat tradition back, and that includes hard work, character, and family. It’s not just about talent. The starting running back is not treated any differently than the backup,” Burk said. “We are looking for new students to joint the program, so we invited them to come watch and see what we’re doing.”

OPERATION NIGHTCAP
In an effort to combat impaired driving in our community, the Bay City Police Department will conduct “Operation Nightcap” during the Memorial Day weekend.  This operation will be a two-fold effort.  As a courtesy to the community and in order to promote a safe Memorial Day weekend, officers will be providing a ride home for citizens as a safer option to drinking and driving.

The Bay City Police Department will assign a police officer to provide citizens with courtesy rides from locations within the city limits of Bay City to the safety of citizen’s home in the city limits of Bay City.  The goal of this part of the operation is to reduce the risk of drinking and driving by offering safe transportation home to individuals who believe they may be too intoxicated to drive.

The Police Department requests that citizens call the Police Department at least one-half hour prior to their need to be taken home, when possible.  Officers of the Bay City Police Department will then be assigned to provide the courtesy rides home.  Citizens should call 979-245-8500 in order to initiate a courtesy ride.

The second phase of “Operation Nightcap” will consist of a special enforcement team that will be on the streets throughout the Memorial Day weekend.  They will aggressively seek out those that endanger our community by operating a vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or other intoxicants.  The mission of the operation is to detect, apprehend, and remove impaired drivers from our streets before they can cause injury or death to themselves or others.  They are enlisting assistance from our citizens in this effort.  Citizens can aid in this operation by reporting impaired motorist to the Bay City Police Department at 979-245-8500 from their cellular phones.

CONSERVATION GRANTS AVAILABLE
Landowners in the lower Colorado River basin may be eligible to receive grant funding for conservation practices that reduce soil erosion and increase native plant and animal diversity.

By tapping a three year, $387,000 U.S. Environmental Protection Agency 319(h) grant, passed through the Texas State Soil and Water Conservation Board, the Lower Colorado River Authority will pay up to 50 percent of the cost of certain conservation and land management projects for eligible landowners in Bastrop, Blanco, Burnet, Colorado, Fayette, Lampasas, Llano, Matagorda, San Saba, Travis and Wharton counties.

The new grant augments the LCRA Creekside Conservation Program, a 22-year-old effort to help private landowners in the lower Colorado River basin implement pre-approved land management projects such as brush management, rangeland reseeding, cross fencing and alternative water source development. Traditionally, there has been a $10,000 reimbursement cap per landowner, but the grant raises the cap to $15,000 per landowner.

To determine eligibility and to apply for participation, landowners should contact their local Natural Resource  Conservation Service (NRCS) office.

For more information, visit the Creekside Conservation Program page on LCRA’s website or call 1-800-776-5272, Ext. 7155.

POST OFFICES TO REMAIN OPEN....FOR NOW
Several rural post offices across the country that were set to be closed this year have been given a little life support, thanks to the election season. The U.S. Postal Service announced planned closures of rural post offices have been postponed in order to accommodate mail-in votes.

According to the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, 17 percent of voters in the 2010 election submitted mail-in ballots therefore, a disruption in U.S. Postal Service operations could affect the receipt of mail-in
ballots.

The Postal Service had originally planned to close 223 processing centers and thousands of rural post offices across the country, due to budget cuts.  Happy Radio listening area rural post offices on the hit list include Collegeport, LaWard, LaSalle, Danevang, Lane City, Kendleton, and Pierce.

The first round of closures was scheduled to begin May 15 and continue thru Aug. 15.  Good news for some postal employees and rural citizens, there are several members of Congress working on legislation to save rural post offices.
